While in Australia for the Roxy Women’s Pro shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton had the chance to meet with Zac Goleblowski, a 15-year-old who lost his leg in an attack at Western Australia’s Wharton Beach. The two had a chance to talk about the horror of escaping from the jaws of sharks, living with a missing limb, and getting back out in the water.
“I remember seeing a tail and a fin after the attack, then I looked down and it registered straight away – my leg was gone,” Zac recalled. He told how three days afterwards, his missing leg washed up on the beach not far from the scene, horrifying the tourists who found it.
Our cultural fascination with shark attacks (and survivors) is rather bizarre, but oddly inspiring at the same time.
