Out On A [Missing] Limb

by The Editors on January 27, 2007

0,,5372291,00While in Australia for the Roxy Women’s Pro shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton had the chance to meet with Zac Goleblowski, a 15-year-old who lost his leg in an attack at Western Australia’s Wharton Beach. The two had a chance to talk about the horror of escaping from the jaws of sharks, living with a missing limb, and getting back out in the water.

“I remember seeing a tail and a fin after the attack, then I looked down and it registered straight away – my leg was gone,” Zac recalled. He told how three days afterwards, his missing leg washed up on the beach not far from the scene, horrifying the tourists who found it.

Our cultural fascination with shark attacks (and survivors) is rather bizarre, but oddly inspiring at the same time.

When I first read about happened to Bethany I was shocked and then the fact that she was able to get back out there in the water, was amazing. I had nearly drowned when i was surfing around the same time, and what she did gave me the courage to get back out in the water and to continue what I love doing. Surfing.

Bethany Hamilton is AMAZING!! I saw Soul Surfer recently and i was starstruck by her courage to get back in the water. I love how while she was being attacked she never even screamed so there werent any panick attacks.LOL:) I also was all over the fact that her friend(i forgot her name at the moment) was crying and loved her sooo much that she gave her a gift. But i didnt like it when in the movie Bethany(AnnaSophia Robb) gave her surfboard away. Her story is so inspirational, and Zac Goleblowski, i wonder how hard it is to do things with one leg.
