Mammoth Mountain's 2003/2004 Season a Huge Success
MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CA - Mammoth Mountain Ski Area had the most successful
season in 18 years during 2003/2004, overcoming weather issues that kept
many other resorts across America from showing growth. Mammoth ended the
season with a 4% growth over last season for skier visits, recording the
best year since 1985-86.
With nearly 1.4 million skiers visiting the slopes this winter, Mammoth was
California's most visited resort, and the third most visited resort in the
country behind Vail and Breckenridge in Colorado. Mammoth stayed open from
November 6, 2003 to June 6, 2004, granting skiers and snowboarders 214 days
of winter operations.
Infrastructure improvements made at Mammoth over the last few years have
made it easier to access, ski and ride at Mammoth during extreme weather
conditions. Snowmaking that began in mid-October prepared Mammoth for an
early November opening and helped provide a solid snow base in times of
little snow. The new Village Gondola and town shuttle system made access to
the mountain possible during big storms, including December 2003, when
Mammoth received over 13 feet of snow and guests may have otherwise stayed
home.
"Mammoth enjoyed a very successful season and an increase in visitation, and
we certainly acknowledge that this is in part a result of the constant
improvements and changes we have made to help prepare for weather
obstacles," said Pam Murphy, Senior Vice President of Mammoth Mountain. "But
the most important reason for our success is the team of people at Mammoth
who work hard to create great services and products and make sure that
guests have an incredible experience."
Mammoth's skier numbers have been on a steady increase since the late 90's,
a result of a well-tracked growth plan. More concentrated marketing
efforts, events and promotions were successful in driving visits during
typically slower mid-week and non-holiday periods.
The Unbound Terrain Park continued as a leader in the very important youth
action segment. Mammoth demonstrated its commitment to youth action sports
by keeping a pipe open all season long. In early May, after the snow melted
on pipes on the lower mountain, the Unbound Terrain Park crew built a new
spring pipe higher on the mountain that kept the pros coming through June.
June Mountain had a record year, bringing in over 90,000 visits throughout
the season. Much of the success came as a result of the buzz around June's
popular JM2 Terrain Park, which attracted the freeriding and youth action
sports markets. An increase in season pass sales and terrific snow
conditions also contributed to June's success.
