Latest Update: June 15 , 2001 by Ben Marcus

19:57 June 15, 2001 BROTHER DAN'S COMPUTER, LYNNWOOD WASHINGTON

Bad news. Jay Moriarity apparently drowned in a diving accident in the Maldives. That just sucks. I really liked Jay. He was a Pleasure Point guy and a good guy, and I can only wish I had his ability in the ocean and his love for it. When I got to my brother's house this afternoon there was an e-mail from Colin Brown telling me the bad news. I looked it up on Aggroville and it was confirmed. Then I called Peter Mel and talked to Tara. It's true. Some kind of diving accident, but that can mean anything. I'm certified, I know what can go wrong and when it does go wrong, it's very easy to drown. Crap. Twenty three years old.

I'm at my brother Dan's, en route to Montana. We just had barbequed cheeseburger and watched the Seattle Mariners trouncing the Padres. I didn't know the Mariners were 50-14; pretty amazing when you consider they traded away their two superstars. Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez are both playing for losers now, so they're crying all the way to the bank. 50-14 is as amazing as Barry Bonds' 34 home runs before the All Star break.

Ike is missing. I left him here yesterday because I figured he'd be happier running around here then going back and forth in the van. Ike has a tendency to disappear on me. He's done it a few times before. I suspect he goes exploring, gets freaked out by dogs or something and then hides until nighttime. He usually comes back after dark. Cats are much happier at night. they have the advantage. Hopefully he'll be back soon, but it doesn't get dark here until 22:00.

Well the van is all packed, and more orderly than it was when I left on my last trip to Alaska, last September. I've sorted things out pretty well and it might be more comfortable. I was at my mom's until about 15:00 today, slowly getting organized and throwing stuff away. I have about $3000 to last me the summer, so I'm going to eat lots of oatmeal and not stay in hotels. I learned that the hard way last fall. I spent a fortune and I'm still paying for it.

I managed to salvage some of my lost files from Dan's computer. Last night I realized how much Gateway had erased from my hard drive, and I got a little pissed. Fortunately, Dan had saved all my e-mails, so I salvaged a copy of Deus ex Machina. That will save me some Internet time.

So, all the comforts of home tonight, and then on the road tomorrow-finally. I want to stop by Grand Coulee Dam on the way out to Idaho. I re-read Cadillac Desert a few months ago and I've got water on the brain. There's also a town nearby called Marcus. I might buy a coffee cup or something.

I'm thinking about sending Kim Moriarity some flowers. That poor girl. She now has to bear the unbearable.
