Latest Update: August 6, 2001 by Ben Marcus

9:52 PT MONDAY AUGUST 6, 2001 THE WATSON LAKE LODGE RESTAURANT

ODOMETER
TRIP METER

MONEY

Three cans of cat food: $5 and faith.
Gas, Yukon pins, magnet: $75

Well old Mr. Johnson said he'd shoot that cat on sight. He loaded up his shotgun, with nails and dynamite. He waited and he waited for that cat to come around. Forty seven pieces of the man were all they found.

But the cat came back, the very next day.
The cat came back, you know they thought he was a goner. No, the cat came back, he just couldn't stay away, no. No no no no.

Woke up this morning feeling 50/50 about the whole Ike deal. I think he's too quick and smart to get eaten by a bear or a fox or a wolverine or whatever. I think he's loveable enough to be stolen by someone who wouldn't give him back. I know he's stupid enough to get locked in somewhere he shouldn't have been in the first place.

I slept so so and then woke up around 7:30. The Health and Human Services Building where I thought Ike was locked in didn't open until 8:30, so I drove around, looked for a laundromat and a car wash, checked e-mail and bought some cat food as a show of faith.

Back at the library, the two ladies in the Outreach office hadn;t seen Ike, and they said the building hadn't been open over the weekend, putting the kabosh on one hope.

The Town Hal is connected to the library and the lady behind the desk called the Animal Control guy, but they didn't have a cat. She took down Ike's info and said that people around Watson Lake were good about turning in cats, and might not call the number on the tag.

The battery was dead, yet again, so I sat and worked and figured I'd wait a few hours for everything to 0pen around 10:00 and see if Ike popped out.

Around an hour ago I saw one of the women from the Outreach building come out of a basement door, beneath the building. She kneeled down and seemed to be talking to something. When I saw a black tail waving in the air, I felt much better.

Ike's okay. He was hungry and wanted to keep running around, but I threw him in the van and tried to convince someone to give me a jump so I could head up the Campbell Highway. Ike jumped out of the van once and ran up some stairs, but I caught him and put him back in.

I got gas at Fas Gas and bought some presents for Russia, and now, two days later, it is time to hit the road.

Stupid cat. Glad he's back.
